The area targeted by the intervention, at the intersection of Via San Pio V and Via Santa Madonna del Riposo, called Largo Sa Pio V, is located in the Municipio XIII Aurelio.
Prior to the project, the spaces were characterized by two areas designated for parking: the larger one in front of the St. Pius V Parish Church, with herringbone parking spaces, and the smaller one in front of Vittorio Alfieri Primary School, with in-line parking for cars, and comb parking for motorcycles. The perimeter of these parking spaces was defined by metal guard railings.
La SIA, thanks to its AIM platform is able to connect different corporate structures, which can easily use BIM models, even without having BIM project management skills, allowing users involved in on field maintenance, to have in Digital, through the use of tablets or smartphones, data sheets, maintenance plans, safety procedures, simply by framing a QR-code present locally on the Radio Base Station, just as service engineers can determine, the occupancy of a pylon, residual static availability or electromagnetic spaces, simply by querying an always available updated digital model.
The intervention envisaged the redevelopment of these public spaces with the creation of a real square, for which the La SIA team thought of raising the walkable surface from the current street level to that of the sidewalks – for a height varying between 10 and 15 cm – in order to follow as much as possible the orographic trend of the terrain, which is slightly sloping both in the direction of Via Aurelia along Via della Madonna del Riposo and from the center of the intersection towards Via Ludovico Altieri.
Having realized the coplanarity between the two wings of the future square and the road layout of Via della Madonna del Riposo that crosses Largo San Pio V, it was necessary to connect the new elevation with the current one with two ramps.
The spatial continuity of the area has allowed for the creation of a public place that is perfectly usable by pedestrians, while also providing the possibility of impromptu use for events involving the detour of traffic along the perimeter roads.
In order to carry out the work, the project was intended to be part of a more general restyling of Largo San Pio V, paying special attention to the choice of materials and technologies best suited to convey the idea of a public space with a modern character, but at the same time not disconnected from the surrounding urban pre-existences.
As such, elements of the colors of natural basalt, typical of the Roman sampietrino, were adopted for the paving. Part of the horizontal road markings, such as the stripes for crosswalks, will also be made with white-colored blocks instead of traditional paint, maintaining the desired effect but simultaneously ensuring greater durability.
The material chosen for the floorings is stoneware, declined in four combinations, different in type, color and thickness, depending on the specific function of the area for which it is designed.
First of all, high-strength outdoor stoneware blocks, 10 x 10 cm in size and 6.5 cm thick, were adopted to cover the roadway on Via della Madonna del Riposo that crosses the square, imitating, as mentioned, with a black basalt effect, the color of cobblestones. Instead, the ivory basalt effect will be used to define white ground signs, such as crosswalks. The two side wings, on the other hand, will be covered with elements measuring 60 x 60 cm, 3 cm thick, with 2 cm joints and appropriate elastic expansion joints in color made on site. The colors of the tiles will be two: a natural basalt-effect gray and a lighter, lava-stone-effect gray, composing a paving pattern in which the different shades will intersect to create a dynamic pattern, in alternating bands of different widths.
The paving will be laid on a on a bedding with an average thickness of 5 cm, executed with premixed mortar made with special binders and selected aggregates in a grain size curve, suitable for application in cyclically dry and wet environments.
